You just can’t keep Karl Burke down for one second as the northern trainer landed yet again another big Saturday winner. The 1m 2f Listed Race Cocked Hat Stakes went to Golden Story under Pierre-Louis Jamin who continued his love affair with Goodwood this season by making it three wins from his last four rides at the Sussex track.
Just five runners went to post with all eyes on Saxon Street who has an entry in this year’s Derby.
Having won twice in his only two runs, the colt was an odds on shot to make it three in a row. However, the three-year-old never looked likely to reach the pair of Golden Story and Del Maro who were left to battle it out between them for the honours, with Golden Story keeping on well towards the finish to just prevail by a nose.
Inis More has always looked a filly who might really fulfil her potential when moved up to middle distances and she took a first step towards confirming those impressions with a narrow defeat of Earth Shot in the Listed Fitzdares Height of Fashion Stakes under Saffie Osborne.
Local trainer David Menuisier has always been at great lengths to point out how much he likes this filly and today she really showed how good she can be.
Racing wide early she pressed the winner over a furlong out, keeping on well and just doing enough to earn a tilt at the Prix de Diane Longines over 1m2½f on June 14 at Chantilly.
“They went so slow early I was worried they would finish up sprinting, a bit like they did in the 1,000 Guineas,” said Menuisier. “That could have found her out because she travels great but she hasn’t always found a lot off the bridle.
“Running over one mile two you can discover new traits and she quickened strongly and held on well to the line, so I’m delighted she showed so much mettle.”
Menuisier added: “It’s definitely one of the logical steps and timing-wise it worked well to come here between the Guineas and the Diane.
“I’d be happy to stay over this sort of trip for now, and the Diane would definitely fit in her schedule. Getting big black type was well deserved and that’s a relief. The quicker the pace, the better for the filly and I think if they’d gone flat out today, she would have won more easily.”
Osborne picked up a double in the hot Sussex sunshine after steering Wedonttelllies to success in the lucky last for trainer Richard Hughes.
Twenty four hours earlier, Richard Hannon looked to have unearthed a promising filly in Pershaada. However, you can now add Dark Issue to that growing list after she produced an excellent turn of foot on debut under pat Dobbs to score impressively by five and a half lengths.
After a measly amount of winners recently, its looking like Charlie Appleby’s yard are beginning to turn a corner with the winners now flowing from the Newmarket handler.
Catullus, under Tom Marquand fairly bolted up for Godolphin in the 7f handicap by three and three quarter lengths to give Appleby his sixth winner in the past fortnight from 15 runners.
Mother Dear’s debut run in a hot race at Newbury a month ago was always going to be a learning process having finished eighth of 11. The trip up to 1m 2f certainly benefited the filly who took the British EBF Fillies Restricted Novice Stakes for Hughie Morrison with Rob Hornby aboard.
