Double for Saffie ahead of a big week at Ascot

Saffie Osborne warmed up for Royal Ascot by landing a double on the card at Windsor on Monday evening’s Best Of British Race Night.

The British jockey bagged a quick fire double in the warm Berkshire sunshine by steering Arabian Sun and Lyndon B to victory in front of another healthy Monday evening crowd down by the river.

Riding for Clive Cox, three-year-old Arabian Sun came through the pack of 14 runners to win going away by two lengths in the 6f handicap.

A lightly raced gelding, the horse had previously finished eighth of 13 in a Leicester handicap three weeks ago after being absent for 10 months.

Half an hour later, Osborne was back in the winners enclosure after riding Lyndon B to success in the 1m handicap.

The veteran nine-year-old has run sixteen times without a win back in 2022. Despite taking a keen hold early on, the gelding tracked the leaders before ridden out over a furlong from home and kept on well to win by one and a half lengths from the odds on favourite Thyer.

Lightly raced maiden Hello Luna has been knocking on the door lately without getting her head in front. The Jonathan Portman trained three-year-old was shaken up by Rossa Ryan before running on well towards the finish to get up in the final strides to win by a head from Foro Romano.

The return back to 5f certainly worked in Our Cody’s favour after following up her second at Chelmsford 42 days ago by scoring cosily in the 5f maiden stakes for Richard Hughes with Finley Marsh in the plate.

The trainer said after the race he was a little worrird how she would run after the horse  got worked up in the saddling box before the race due to the warm evening. However, he had nothing to fear after an impressive performance that will see Our Cody go for the sprint at Newbury in July.

On the eve of Royal Ascot, it was a pleasure to see Richard Hannon at the course. With Rosallion one of his favoured runners for the week, another horse who looks a fine prospect is River King who duly prevailed his long odds on to win quickening up by two and three quarter lengths after leading all the way in the 1m 2f after stepping up in trip from a mile.
