Three year wait is worth while as Flamingo Rose scores at Lingfield on debut for new trainer

By Peter Moore at Lingfield Park 8th July 2025

Flamingo Rose defied an absence of over three years to take the 2m 1/2f handicap at Lingfield Park on Monday afternoon.

Making her debut for Newmarket trainer Michael Wigham, the eight-year-old was a little reluctant to enter the stalls and was slowly away, but once jockey Liam Wright settled the horse early on in the race, the grey hit the front at the furlong pole to go on and win nicely by three lengths from Cherry Cola at the nice price of 22-1.

Monkmoor Pip was bought at the bargain price of just 1,000 guineas. A month ago, the five-year-old ran a creditable race at Kempton to finish third over eleven furlongs. The gelding lined up with nine other rivals in the 1m 3f selling stakes and went on to win cosily by four and three lengths.

It was an interesting auction in the winner’s enclosure after the race with bidding slow to get going until a group of three men decided to enter the bidding with the aim of buying the horse.

Bidding went as high as £6,800, with the trio delighted with their new purchase.

Penn Avenue justified her odds-on tag by securing the opener under Richard Kingscote for Daniel & Claire Kubler.

The three-year-old ran a respectable third of nine in a handicap at Chelmsford City 26 days ago. Kingscote had to work hard to win the race with the horse running off a mark of 52 to hold on to win by a head from Good Shot.

Rod Millman is a canny trainer who places his horses at various tracks around the country to good effect. Going up in trip certainly didn’t faze Brightling who took the six-furlong handicap under Lewis Edmunds who had a winner at Haydock just three days ago.

Only four runners lined up fo the start in this trappy handicap. Entering the last half a  furlong there was very little to separate the quartet, before Brightling edged ahead to win by three quarters of a length.

Command The Stars defied a penalty to take the seven furlongs novice stakes. The two-year-old backed up his performance at Beverley where he was successful at 7f by winning again by leading all the way.

Although drifting off the favoured rail, an enterprising ride from Callum Shepherd who managed to get him back on track to go on and win comfortably by 1 ¾ lengths for George Scott.
