Report from Starlight Charity Day at Newbury Friday 16th May 2025

By Peter Moore
Qatar Racing look to have unearthed another gem in Montpellier, after the three-year-old took his record to two wins from as many starts after getting up on the line to beat the odds on favourite Sea Force by a head in the first division of the 7f novice stakes on Starlight Charity Raceday on Friday at Newbury.
The three-year-old has an eye catching pedigree, being by sire-of-the-moment Wootton Bassett and out of the Prix de l’Abbaye winner Mabs Cross, and he showed grit to go alongside his talent to get the better of 10-11 favourite Sea Force by a head in an exciting finish.
“I was thrilled he showed natural progression from first run to second,” said winning trainer James Ferguson. “He’d have learned plenty today. He had to fight a little bit, whereas first time he found it a lot easier. Carrying a penalty is no easy feat.
“He seemed to handle the ground no problem. It was riding on the quick side and he still showed a little bit of greenness, but overall I’m thrilled. He’s definitely going to improve in time.”
Montpellier’s rider Oisin Murphy was completing a quickfire double after scoring aboard the Andrew Balding-trained Humidity in the 6f maiden, to win by a short head from Title Role.
George Baker continued his recent run of winners by saddling Marsh Benham to victory under Jack Callan in the opening apprentice handicap. The six-year-old ran in this same race a year ago but finished down the field.
Under a patient ride from Callan, he dropped the gelding at the back of the field early doors before coming from last to first to score by a head from Hover.
After being off the track for 237 days, Burrito made a winning return under Benoit de la Sayette to take the 1m 2f handicap for team Gosden.
The Newmarket yard of William Haggas is in fine fettle and Raafedd added to their winning tally of winners by quickening up nicely to win by two lengths in the 7f noviLambourn trainer was celebrating her first winner ce stakes.
There was another tight finish in the 1m 2f Coolmore City Of Troy EBF Maiden Stakes with three horses in contention heading up to the line. It was left to the judge to split them with the Richard Hannon trained Meblesh getting the better of Altareq by a head.
Jack Mitchell has had a productive twenty four hours after riding a four timer at Kempton last night, he made it another winner after steering Zarakerjack to victory in the 1m 2f handicap.
The three-year-old was making his handicap debut and was also running on the turf for the first time and broke his maiden tag at the fourth time of asking.
New trainer Faye Bramley only has a small yard, but the Lambourn trainer was celebrating her fist winner on the turf after Amancio took the lucky last with Edward Greatrex in the plate.
