Double’s for both George Baker and Hector Crouch at Lingfield on Tuesday

By Peter Moore at Lingfield Park Tuesday 22nd July 2025
Afternoon racing at Lingfield Park on Tuesday proved popular for both trainer George Baker and jockey Hector Crouch.
Baker, saddled both Abate and Atlantis Blue with Crouch steering both Scenario and Loving Apprentice to victory at the Surrey track.
Veteran Abate warmed up for next Thursday’s Magnolia Cup in style by making all to land the 5f handicap by four lengths.
With booked rider Neil Callan sidelined through injury, Pat Cosgrave picked up the extra ride on the nine-year-old who was wearing blinkers for the first time.
Abate’s victory on his third start since joining trainer George Baker from Adrian Nicholls came in the colours of Kate Hutchins., the social media and fashion influencer who will ride the gelding at Glorious Goodwood.
“It’s wonderful,” said Baker. “Kate Hutchins has been with us since the turn of the year and Ted Durcan sourced this horse for her out of the Nicholls family up in Yorkshire.”
The Magnolia Cup is a prestigious charity race for selected leading women of business, sport, fashion and media.
Baker added: “Kate’s an absolute star. She’s got 1.6 million on Instagram and maybe this horse will give her a few more if it all goes well next week.
The Epsom-based trainer had earlier won the 1m1f handicap with Atlantis Blue, who was picking up his third win, all with Jim Crowley aboard.
I’m delighted to see her back winning. I’ve been saying to my owners ‘this is England, it will rain’ for so long that no-one was believing me said Baker.
“We ran her the other day at Sandown and it was trainer error, but on this ground she’s a different prospect.”
Crouch, bagged a quick fire double after Scenario and Loving Apprentice proved to good for their rivals.
Scenario, who finished a creditable fourth of 10 in a handicap at this course two weeks ago, was moving down in trip by two furlongs. The three-year-old was ridden to lead inside the final furlong and kept on well to win by one and three quarter lengths.
Loving Apprentice was a comfortable winner in the six furlongs fillies handicap under Crouch. Back at six furlongs, the filly dominated the race to cruise to victory by five lengths.
Gran Descans duly obliged under champion jockey Oisin Murphy in the 1m 3f novice stakes. The three-year-old by Frankel started off a long odds on shot, but still had a bit of work to do at the end, before pulling away to win by two and a quarter lengths.
West Country trainer Rod Millman is enjoying an excellent season. Having won the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury on Saturday with Anthelia, top weight Brightling led all the way to take the 5f nursery handicap under George Wood.
Wood, elected to head towards the stand side rail which proved successful by putting the race to bed a long way from home.
