I’m The One produces a mouthwatering debut to move to the head of the Oaks betting

I’m The One moved to the top of the market for the forthcoming Betfred Oaks after making a spectacular debut in the 1m 2f fillies maiden on the opening day of Newbury’s flat season.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, she was sent off the even-money favourite and despite a wide draw, she travelled strongly before quickening clear when shaken up by William Buick to win by six lengths going away.

The victory continued the yard’s fine week, in which Oxagon, Portcullis and Damysus won at Newmarket’s Craven meeting. I’m The One was also the Gosdens’ fifth success in the race in the last ten years.

Thady Gosden said: “A natural next step would be a Classic trial and there are several options, some of those coming quite soon.

“She behaved very well first time in front of a big crowd. She was drawn wide and William had to use her early, which is not always easy for an inexperienced filly, but she travelled well and picked up nicely.”

On a day of high-class debutants on Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials day, another impressive winner was the Ed Walker trained Synchronicity.

Purchased for 900,000gns, she is a sister to three-time Group 1 winner Ombudsman and made a winning start to her career in the 7f fillies’ maiden by two lengths.

Walker said: “She’d probably be the highest-profile, biggest-pressure debutante I’ve had, other than Lightning Polka for the King and Queen at Haydock last year.

“I was pretty nervous and feeling the pressure a bit, but they say pressure is a privilege, and it’s welcome. If you’re not feeling the pressure, you probably haven’t got the horses, but there was a degree of expectation.”

Walker added “She’s obviously expensive, and she’s got the pedigree to go with that, but she’s been doing all the right things at home and will only improve. Ombudsman is an unbelievable horse, and so far she’s following in his footsteps, but I think we’ll go up to a mile next.

“Coming into this season, the plan was here, and if that went well, then the Listed Michael Seely at York could be an option. Whether it comes too soon, I’m not sure, but she’s a really exciting filly.”

Maltese Cross put himself firmly in the Betfred Derby picture after prevailing in the feature 1m2f novice contest by a neck from My Love Is King.

Trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis bagged just his second and third winners of the Calander year after picking up a double on the card.

Call My Bluff produced a 40-1 shock in the 2m 1/2f handicap with John Eagan in the saddle. The nine-year-old who has been plagued with injuries made all with the 57-year-old Eagan completing just his second winner of 2026.

It wasn’t long before Ffrench Davis was back in the winners enclosure after champion jockey Oisin Murphy steered Mirabeau to victory by a head from Addison Grey.
