Hold The Press made the headlines at Lingfield on Tuesday afternoon after springing a 40-1 shock for trainer John Jenkins, the middle leg of a treble for in form jockey Marco Ghiani.
The seven-year-old had won just once in his previous 27 starts, with that success also coming at Lingfield in September 2023, when he sprang a 100-1 surprise.
Hold The Press was soon in front and kept on strongly to beat Victory Sound, providing Jenkins with his fifth winner of the year.
Ghiani told Sky Sports Racing: “He’s been running well fresh and he looked amazing in the paddock. When we got to the furlong pole, he needed his big heart, and he put his best foot forward all the way to the line.”
Ghiani sealed a 281-1 treble on the Marco Botti-trained Perfect Ruler in the mile handicap and the Roger Teal-trained Rovinia in the second division of the 7f classified stakes, bringing up his 71st winner of the year.
Jockey Paddy Bradley bagged a double on the card after steering Charles Morin and Balon D’Or to victory.
The addition of blinkers for the first time on Charles Morin seemed the perfect tonic for trainer Pat Phelan after the gelding took the 1m 4f handicap by one and a quarter lengths from Someone’s Wish.
The well backed Balon D’or became Bradley’s second winner on the card after landing Division one of the 6f handicap for trainer Simon Dow after making all and holding off the challenge of Happier by a head.
Henry Callan maintained his perfect record at Lingfield, making it six winners from six rides at the track, four from four this season, with a length success on Diamond Bay in the 2m amateur jockeys’ handicap for trainer Tom Ward.
