Rossa Ryan completed a landmark 1,000 winners after partnering Lopeo to victory in the opening race of the afternoon at Goodwood, the 1m maiden stakes on Tuesday.
Ryan, who rode his first winner in 2016, enjoyed his most high-profile success in last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Bluestocking.
With the ground steadily detreating from soft to heavy due to heavy rain, Ryan aboard local trainer David Menuisier’s maiden two-year-old, the outsider of the three runners, chased leaders early on before going second over 2f out . The colt relished the heavy ground to stay on well to win by two and a quarter lengths.
Win number 1,001 wasn’t too far away for the popular Irishman after the odds on shot Master Vintner prevailed in the 1m 2f novice stakes.
Having finished an encouraging third behind the highly rated Scandinavia on debut at Navan in May, the horse was moved to Ralph Beckett’s yard from the Irish stable of Andy Oliver.
Ryan always had the horse in a prominent position to be ridden 2f out before taking the lead inside the final furlong and staying on well to win by one and a half lengths from Jupiter Ammon.
Ryan said: “He’s still pretty green, he didn’t really know what it’s all about yet. He struggled a bit when I asked him to quicken, he was scrambling for his legs, but then it suddenly clicked.
“He’s going to come on a bundle for that run and could drop into a nice handicap at the back end of the year. He could be dangerous.”
On fire sprinter Another Baar won for the second day in a row to complete a rapid four timer in only 15 days.
Just a day after scoring at Brighton on good to firm, he showed his versatility by handling heavy ground at Goodwood with equal ease after romping home by four lengths in the 5f handicap.
The application of blinkers has sparked the winning streak, and Keatley said: “The blinkers have worked a treat and he’ll go to the Ayr Bronze Cup now with only an 8lb penalty, which is excellent.
“He has plenty of ability, but we weren’t sure if he was using it or not. The blinkers have obviously helped him get that ability out and given him confidence.”
Slay Queen backed up her win at Newbury last month with another victory, this time in entirely different ground. The heavy ground didn’t inconvenience the two-year-old filly who won under Joe Leavy for Richard Hannon by one and a half lengths.
Receiving 23lb from top weight and course specialist Divine Comedy certainly helped the chances of Novelista who bagged the near rail coming into the straight to hold off the challenge of Divine Comedy by a length under Hollie Doyle.
Marco Ghiani’s purple patch continued after the Italian steered Dancing Tiger to victory in the 1m 2f handicap.
Ghiani, who bagged a double at Brighton yesterday elected to go on from the front on the three-year-old who had been well backed during the day.
Despite drifting into the center of the course, Ghiani always looked in control of the horse and held off Goodwood specialist Platinum Prince to go on and win by two lengths.
