Scorchers suffer narrow loss to rivals Lions in BBL Cup

Surrey Scorchers suffered a heart breaking one point loss to London Lions in the BBL Cup at Surrey Sports Park on Friday.

Fans poured into the venue in anticipation of a home win, but Lions had other ideas. The win was looking good when Scorchers led at the start of the final quarter by 12 points before a magnificent fightback from the Lions snatched victory out of the hands of the Surrey based side.

Before the match on Friday it was announced that the Lions main team wouldn’t be available to face Scorchers due to a recent incident involving Covid-19 contact tracing. The London side had to send their Division 1 side in their place. The Barking Abbey Academy coached by James Vear certainly didn’t let their senior partners down.

Scorchers themselves also had problems on the night with no Stanley Davis Jnr. Lamar Hamrick, as well as GB stars Andrew Lawrence and Robert Gilchrist.

In a tightly contested opening quarter there was nothing to choose to separate the sides with the score at the buzzer 20-20.

Scorchers got their noses in front in the second quarter thanks to some highscoring from captain Tayo Ogedengbe. However, Lions kept hanging on in there and at the break trailed by just a single point.

Scorchers came out strongly at the start of the third period and stretched their advantage to 11 points at the end of the period.

The first points on the board in the fourth quarter fell the home sides way and with a shade over three minutes left, Scorchers looked on course for victory. The visitors hit back to reduce the gap to only one point and then took the lead for the first time in the quarter.

With seven seconds left Scorchers regained the lead by a single point, only for the hosts to be called for a foul. Welche stepped up with two free fouls, which he nailed to grasp victory from the hands of Scorchers.

Captain Ogedengbe led the way for Scorchers with a captains performance of 24 points. Saiquan Jamison finished with 16 points and Martelle McLemore 19 points.
