Radio Woking Sport weekly local sport roundup

With none of our local football teams in action this weekend, news centred around happenings of the pitch.

Woking’s central defender Ben Gerring has joined Oxford City on a short-term deal.

Both Woking and Aldershot Town along with every other non-league club has welcomed the news from the government that fans can return from December 2nd. Albeit in small numbers, it certainly is a big step that is most welcome.

In rugby it was a winning weekend for both Harlequins sides with the men beating Northampton Saints by 49-29 at Franklin Gardens in the Gallagher Premiership and the women maintaining their winning start to the season with a 22-5 win against Gloucester Hartpury in the Alliance Premier 15’s

At Franklin Gardens six different players touched down including Marcus Smith who also kicked 19 points from the tee.

Quins had a six point advantage at the interval which they increased to twenty points after 52 minutes, but Saints hit back with a couple of quick tries before two late tries from Scott Steele and Smith was enough to secure a bonus point victory.

Harlequins women also came away with a bonus point victory- their sixth in a row to stay second in the table.

In basketball, Surrey Scorchers completed their first victory of the season after a narrow 76-72 win against the visiting Worcester Wolves in the BBL Cup at Surrey Sports Park.

Scorchers were always chasing the game in the first three periods, but a spirited last quarter including a run of 10-0 saw Scorchers over the line.

Tayo Ogedengbe and Connor Cashaw both hit 18 points, with Cashaw also picking up seven rebounds and five assists. The victory means that Scorchers finished second in the group and will travel to face Manchester Giants in the quarter finals of the BBL Cup on a date and time to be announced.

Off the court Scorchers Rashad Hassan has left the club to sign for a new club overseas. Returning back to Surrey for a third spell is NBA draft pick and GB International Ryan Richards who has joined Scorchers on a season long deal.

In F1 in the Bahrain Grand Prix the McLaren pairing of Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz finished in the top five behind eventual winner Lewis Hamilton.

Norris finished in fourth place with Sainz in fifth almost twelve seconds behind Hamilton.
