Middlesex just shade the honours of day three at Lords

Middlesex shaded the honours on Day three of the LV=County Championship game at a sunny Lords. The hosts gained a first innings lead of 114. Surrey were reduced to 20-2 but rallied to close just nine runs behind.

Middlesex resumed on 114 for three with Robbie White and Sam Robson at the crease. Robson- who started the morning one short of his century- brought up his fifty with a push up to short leg. White took twenty minutes to add to his total under some tight and accurate bowling from the Surrey pair of Kemar Roach and Reece Topley.

It took Surrey into the second hour of the morning session to claim their first wicket and it Was Rikki Clarke who broke the stand worth 133 when White(72) inside edged a ball of extra bounce from Clarke.

Surrey struck another blow to the home side when John Simpson(3) drove loosely at a delivery from Jordan Clark.  By lunch Middlesex have moved on to 176 for five with Robson 76* and Martin Andersson *8 in a turgid morning session that yielded just 62 runs in 30 overs.

Surrey struck the first blow of the afternoon session when Andersson(13) was bowled through the gate by Rikki Clarke.  After Surrey had taken the new ball, Topley picked up his fourth wicket when he trapped Robson leg before just five runs short of his century.

First Class debutant Luke Hollman(2) pulled Clark straight to midwicket. Only a fighting unbeaten 46 from Toby Roland Jones enabled Middlesex to reach 268, an overall lead of 114 with Topley taking 4-56 and Jordan Clark 3-58.

Surrey’s reply started of badly after Mark Stoneman(2) was trapped leg before by Etham Bamber. Roland-Jones first delivery had Hashim Amla(0) plumb lbw for a pair to leave the visitors 20-2, but Surrey were rescued by a third wicket stand between Rory Burns and Ollie Pope of 59, before Pope(32) edged Martin Andersson behind with Surrey 79-3.

It was down to Burns to shepherd Surrey to the close with an unbeaten half-century, with the visitors closing the day on 105-3, still nine runs behind.
