JOSH STAUNTON has spoken of his pride after joining up with the England C squad earlier this week. Staunton, 22, has been ever-present in the Woking defence this season, making 15 appearances and helping guide his side to third in the National League.

The defender recently took part in a three-day training camp in Lilleshall alongside Woking team-mate Joe Ward as England C prepare for their International Challenge Trophy Final against Slovakia next month.

He told Radio Woking Sport: “It was a good opportunity, I’m hugely excited and it was a very proud moment. I was a bit stiff but I was looking forward to it as there was a few people from Dagenham that I knew as well.”

Staunton and Ward were part of a 22-man squad, that will be reduced to just 16 ahead of the final in November, whilst Woking midfielder Charlie Carter was on the stand-by list in case of injuries.

Ward has impressed since joining at the start of the season from Brighton, scoring five goals and claiming two assists, whilst Academy graduate Carter has netted three times from midfield.

Anthony Limbrick has been instrumental behind Woking’s fantastic start this season, implementing a full-time coaching model, training three times a week with double sessions on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Despite this, the Australian has played down the work he has done since taking over the reigns from Garry Hill in the summer, and believes their call-ups were a reflection on their attitude this season.

He told Radio Woking Sport: “Im really pleased for those two and they were key players at the start of the season which is why we got them on two-year contracts we knew they had a good future.”

““Both could have gone to other clubs, but they saw what we are trying to do here and I was pleased they signed for us, however, their good start is down to the way they’ve been training to be able to put in good performances.”
