JOEY JONES reckons that Guiseley’s players will make a good basketball team after their towering forwards caused Woking problems in their 3-2 victory at the Laithwaite’s Community Stadium.
Declan Appau put the Cards ahead on his full debut with a superb 20-yard strike before Rowan Liburd scored either side of the interval to complete an unlikely turnaround.
Regan Charles-Cooks equalised with his fifth goal of the season, but Mike Fondop lapsed on a defensive error to secure Guiseley’s first away win of the campaign.
Speaking to Woking FC TV, Jones joked that the physicality and height of the opposition suggests they won’t look out of place in a basketball team, but believes his side defended well on the whole.
He said: “I think Guiseley will be a good basketball team. We knew they were going to launch everything in the box especially from the last two games where we’ve struggled from set pieces but we dealt with that very well in the first-half.”
“I know they scored from it, but they had more than 20 crosses into our box and we dealt with it well apart from the goal which was annoying. We made it hard for ourselves and didn’t defend the way we would have liked in the second half.”

Anthony Limbrick handed Appau his first start for the club after previously coming off the bench on four occasions this season, and made an instant impact with a strike that flew into the top corner.
Jones was delighted that his hard work has paid off, and reckons his side should have gone on to pick up all three points after being in the position they were in.
He added: “We come back from two defeats and wanted to put it right today, it wasn’t to be, we had good chances in the first half, went 1-0 up and it seemed like we were going to go and win the game.”
“It was a brilliant goal, he’s been working hard in training since the start of pre-season and I’m delighted for him to come in on your first start and score a goal like that.”
Despite the five goals, the game will more than likely be remembered for a moment of controversy when Guiseley goalkeeper rushed out his box and used him arm to stop Jamie Philpot’s knock-on.
Jones revealed that referee Gary Parsons explained how there were Guiseley defenders running in behind and there it wasn’t a goal-scoring opportunity as they were covering their goalkeeper.
Woking will return to action in search of ending a run of three straight defeats when they host League One strugglers Bury in the First Round of the FA Cup.
The 22-year-old, who started the game on Saturday as captain hints that it is only up to the players to get out of the current situation and show a TV audience their capabilities on the pitch.
“We’ve got to get our heads up and get into training this week and really work on beating Bury. It’s good coverage for us being on the television and hopefully we can put a good performance.”
