Match Preview: Woking vs Chester – Vanarama National League

JAMIE PHILPOT will look to score in this third consecutive National League game when Woking travel to Chester this evening.

Anthony Limbrick’s side are currently on a four-game unbeaten run and have lost just once in their last seven matches, moving them to seventh in the table and just two points off the summit.

The Cards face a struggling Chester side who are in the relegation zone with just two wins all season, but head into the game on the back on a 2-0 home victory so Limbrick is wary of the opposition.

He told Woking FC TV: “It’ll be a tough game because they won there in their last home game after not winning for a while so he’ll have a real good feel factor around the place. We’ll do our research and give it our best shot again.”

Full-back Nathan Ralph was the sponsor man of the match in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Hartlepool, and echoed the thoughts of his manager.

He added: ““We haven’t let the journeys phase us so far this season so we’re confident that we’re going to go up there to get the three points.”

Woking had struggled with their away form at the start of the season, but after picking up victories at AFC Fylde and Macclesfield, they head into the game in a rich vein of form on the road.

Limbrick will be hoping that Philpot can continue to find the back of the net after cementing his place as the club’s lone striker in recent weeks.

He added: “We’re really pleased for him. He is that fox in the box type of player and steals goals and does a lot of work up there as well. Our number 9 needs to work hard, press the centre-backs.”

“There’s not a moment where he’s not moving or running so it’s a physical shift for him and he’s had a great attitude since he’s been with us and he’s done really well.”

Limbrick will be boosted by the return of versatile midfielder Fabio Saraiva, who made the bench at the weekend and is in contention to start this evening.

Saraiva made an instant impact in his first season for the club last year, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists, but has not played since the opening day of the season.

Chester have already changed their manager this season, bringing in former Grimsby Town boss Marcus Bignot after sacking Jon McCarthy.

Woking goalkeeper Nathan Baxter played under Bignot during his loan spell at Solihull Moors last season, and is full of praise for the now Chester manager.

He told Radio Woking Sport: “Marcus Bignot has gone in and obviously he’s a top manager and I know how much of an effect he had at Solihull so we’ll be ready for a fight again.”

“It will be made tougher because their game got called off at the weekend so they’ll be nice and fresh and hopefully we can go there and play our football and get our three points.”

Woking have a very good record against Chester, winning 11 of their 16 matches so far. The Cards have also came away from the Deva Stadium with a win on their last four visits and have beaten the Blues in each of their last six meetings.
